Hey All, just wondering if anyone might have a good fix on a plausible date for TSR's first print of the 3rd Ed Chainmail?

The Rules and Sets page says only "1975", but I'm wondering if it could have been earlier?

Reason being:

We have "July 1975" for the 2nd+ print 3rd Ed, which lists Greyhawk at $5 in the product catalog at the back.

We have no date for the 2nd print 3rd Ed, but it doesn't mention Greyhawk in the product catalog despite saying several other titles are coming soon.  In another discussion we arrived at March 1975 for the 1st print of Greyhawk... so the 2nd print 3rd Ed must have been earlier than March 1975.  So January or February 1975?

That doesn't leave much room in 1975 for the 1st print... might it have been earlier?

If by "earlier" you mean 1974, then no. The first issue of the Strategic Review mentions that Chainmail "will be reprinted soon," which means it wasn't then out yet. The first SR (formally the "Spring 1975" issue) went to press before the death of Don Kaye at the end of January, but after the beginning of the year, so we might infer that Chainmail's 3rd printing came in late January or in February. We could do a parade of letters to date this more precisely, but it's pretty clear just from the SR and the earliest Greyhawk ads when it was.

Thanks Jon, great info :)

Do we know why the second print should follow so soon after the first?

Seems like this thread questions whether there really was what the Acaeum describes as a CM 3rd Ed 1st print at all.

There is a lot of stale information in those listings.
