A lower displayed sales price might (theoretically) influence the "market price" of an item, thus lowering the "value" of an item across the board (much like it does for item values on the Indexes here).  This would equate to lower fee revenue for eBay.  I'm just spitballing here... I have no direct evidence they're doing this.  But "fair and transparent" have not been hallmarks of their business practices over the last decade or so.  Such as obscuring bidder info, which permits (and encourages) shill bidding -- which again, results in higher fee revenue for eBay.  Obfuscating and falsely reporting seller feedback ratings (and limiting / discouraging negative feedback), which encourages site commerce = higher fee revenue for eBay.  Developing new and exciting ways to prevent third-party websites (yours truly) from being correctly attributed for sales generated by click-thrus.... higher fee revenue for eBay.  Et cetera.

Best way I have figured to estimate actual selling price is to do a completed item search that will include the item. Then sort by sale price. The exact amounts aren't shown, but are sorted accurately (including shipping). So if a $40 item appears between a $35 and $30 item, then it sold in that range.

For items this far above average, it might not be as helpful, but it tends to work. Alternately, a broader search can work, if you're patient. The above three appear to have sold for only slightly less than the BIN amounts.

That's interesting. When I ran the completed search check they all came up within a few dollars of the listed price so I just assumed that sellers didn't have to report the actual "best offer" amount. I've been seeing these for a while and had always made that assumption. Now I'm guessing that buyers are basically BINing an auction by utilizing the "best offer" feature.

I didn't really see the whole thing with it being a way for eBay to fake the Market with bad realized prices but a protection for sellers that didn't want their discounts given made public. I know if I sold on there I wouldn't want potential buyers to be able to use that as leverage.

Still doesn't explain why someone would pay those prices for those items but to each their own - it's their money.

I happened to find an example of a recently sold item that used "best offer" that I knew exactly what it sold for, thanks to a brag post made by the seller in one of the reseller groups. Ran the completed search on the item and the actual sold price is hidden.Foul, you can check your eBay API call to see if it comes up with the actual sold price. The item # is

In the past, I've used http://www.watchcount.com/ to check for what best offer items have sold. In these cases, it says what the listings said, which is a bit weird for the modules. I have no idea how he's getting those numbers, but more power to him as long as it's on the up-and-up.

I have purchased from this seller in the past, probably 2+ years ago, he usually had more play copy items, but at Reasonable prices.   If he really got those prices, I think it may be time to sell of some more extras.

If they get this sold at 1K, I might have to consider selling mine.

I just wish I could tag these with an emoticon with derisive laughter.

Maybe I'm missing something on this auction?

** expired/removed eBay auction **

I think the highest one of these has sold for recently is $140.  Most sell for $10 - $50.  It's possible that is just the remnants of a sticker in the corner, and could be removed.  Maybe the condition is FN, if that is the case.  I guess it's rare to see one that better than GD condition.  No way to tell how the interior is though, or if the perforated pages are present.

Nice books from that seller but I can't imagine having a hundred + auctions closing the same week.  That's work.

I draw the line at collecting... D&D beach towels.

Watching the rest close out that all looks obscene.  Seller made bank.  Makes me want to sell and buy a new house.
