I didn’t know they made a “big box” version of this until recently.
Found it while looking thru the TSR archive.

It was just an oversized box.

I purchased one of each when they first came out.  It was really weird, but they were Silver Anniversary, so I picked both up.

Here's a listing:

Yep. Heady days, those, when the new owners announced they would be bringing back everything cool to D&D that had been lost over time. The box illustration has been cropped, but the whole painting includes a paladin-type who looks a lot like Prince Valiant. I can't say I'm a big fan of the Prince Valiant look, but I guess it was another way of invoking the style of the fantasy-literature past.

I believe the rules were the only version of non-Advanced, pre-3e D&D to have AC which starts at 10 (instead of 9) & goes down, plus a Turn Undead roll that is 1D20 (instead of 2D6). In other words, it is written as an introduction to AD&D, rather than being its own rules system.

I have found in a D&D Black box of the 1992, along with the original contents: a jade hare (without cover), a mint rulescyclopedia and some extra old dice (i believe they are gamescience)! I will not disclose how much i paid...

Venger was by far my favorite character.  Loved that show as a kid.  Very nice pickup, Mike.

A price list from 1979.  Looking at a conversion from 1979 dollar amounts, I don't get the impression that the early stuff was overly expensive.  Even given their smaller print runs.

Venger's single horn has driven me crazy since the day I saw him. I have no idea why, but I would love to snap the thing off. Maybe urban D&D villains turn their horn to the side to look cool in the hood.

Thanks for posting those, CM, particularly the one with the Holmes Basic dragon. It looks like it is a news service reprint of an article from the NYT from May 3, 1980, which can be found in their archive here:
