The guy is/was one of the most respected of the old guard here. More of a scholar than a collector to my mind ...

This is dead right. He's a good guy who really knows his stuff. I would have every confidence dealing with him.

If this book is worth $14,000 what is my 1st print Monster Manual fresh out of the first box at TSR, that is signed by Gary Gygax (with a dedication as well) to Tim Kask worth? It is also signed by Dave Trampier (who never signed anything) and Tom Wham and Dave Sutherland.

You'll never really know, because you'll never sell it.   However, if this Andre Norton copy sells, I would guess it's safe to say that your copy would sell for more.  8)

The problem when you get to such unique items is that price is purely arbitrary, as is insurance value. It is impossible to replace and value is subjecting and can only be assessed in comparison to such a small pool of other documented sales.

If you estimate it’s value at say $25K and an insurance adjuster asked you to prove it, where does that leave you? At the end of the day it is worth the higher of two values... how much it is worth to you at the point at which you want to sell it, and how much someone is willing to offer you for it. It certainly would be an interesting sale to watch.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

** expired/removed eBay auction **

Well, despite of the very high final value of this auction, i have a question: what is the Stan Gold Collection?

Any chance of a picture? Sounds an amazing piece of D&D history!

If this was a signed baseball, comic, president's autograph, etc. it would come with a lot more research and provenance. Seller reputation alone seems really thin when asking 100x a book's value due to a signature. Outside of a handful of people here, nobody knows who this seller is.

Yep, the handful of people here who would vouch for the authenticity of the seller and item are enough. This is D&D collecting and reputation stands for a lot.
I don't think David would have many voices raised stating his lack of integrity or decency.
But you don't have to agree, that's your prerogative. I can't speak for David, of course, but I sure would like to read his PMs. (And I'd definitely like to rifle through his collection- anyone else remember the "floor of fanzines" photos?!)

You can never have too much of something you didn't need in the first place.

Price is debatable until it sells. As far as the seller goes, he is well known and respected in the collecting community. I would have zero concern buying anything from his collection, 100% upstanding dude.

I've had plenty of discourse with the seller over the years, both on the topic of collecting and in real life about a variety of subjects away from the forum. He is unimpeachable in my opinion and experience. I always came away from those conversations having learned something. Extremely knowledgeable and genuinely kind to boot. We lost something when he withdrew from the community here.

The item and handwriting are absolutely authentic. (I'd put that in writing of course.) The price? Well, we'll see, won't we? :)

My friends Dave & Gary made a quantum leap in the human soul. Remember them.

Well, it was bound to happen...

Someone sees a copy listed for $12,845.69 so why not sell mine for a bargain at $5,000!

Actually, I think that $5000 copy has been listed and relisted for many months.

I reached out to them back when it was first listed and there was some story about how their granddaughter was telling them to list it at that price.
