Hi All,
Just pulled the trigger on a BIN for a D&D chess set that I hadn't ever seen before.  It cost a bit but I am guessing not too many of these were ever made.  Original price for these was over $700 8O  This one is serial #2.  Anyone have one of these or seen another sell in the past?

I think there were at least two different kinds of official D&D chess sets. One older version (1970s, maybe early 1980s?) that looks a bit different and a newer (2nd ed.) version that resembles this. There may be others but that is all I recall. Might be worth doing a forum search here as this has been discussed every now and again. ... plus like scketrewhisp I love chess sets.  :D

Including the one above, there have been at least three D&D chess sets:

TSR Chess Set (1984)
Danbury Mint Official Dungeons & Dragons Chess Set (1996)
WotC D&D Chess Set (2006)

So what then would a hypothetical 1970s TSR chess set look like? The pieces would have been brightly colored, low-impact plactic that wears down so quickly you can't tell if you're looking at a king or a queen. Some pieces would have been sexually explicit, some suggesting devil worship, while others would violate the rights of the Tolkien estate. The board would have been hand-drawn with a magic marker & then mimeographed. The rules would be filled with errata & clunky, laborious concepts that seemed like a good idea at the time. The whole thing would cost the equivalent of $150 in today's money.

We have a couple of the 2006 sets and used to own a 1984 set but I had never seen or heard of this one.  Couldn't find anything on this set using my Google Fu :D

I bought one of these about six months ago. It goes nicely with the 10th ann set and the newer wizards of the coast set

Do you happen to know what the serial # of your set was?

That's the weird part, I'm pretty sure mine had the same serial number (0002).

Hi,

Danbury Mint has put out a weird selection of stuff.

If this is 1994 then it will be pre-internet.

Cheers,
KAL

Uh... I'm not sure what you mean by that.  The internet is much older than 1994 and that's right around when the web started in any meaningful form.

Areas of interest/knowledge: Harn, WFRP, Ars Magica, anything BRP based such as CoC, Runequest, Pendragon and all their related games

It took long enough but it got there in the end. We had distributed hypertext systems up and running over the net at university back in 1989/90 and were far from the first. Tim was right, though; protocol first. :)

Oops... OT again. *check* ^^

Hi,

yes, but its before mass market, before people were discussing Danbury Mint releases on the internet.

Therefore to find much discussion of Danbury Mint releases pre-2000 is not easy, so there won't be much info on it, unless its been reto done.

Cheers,
KAL

Are there any other sets besides these?

I double checked and my set does have the same serial number
