I imagine the figurine is from the southern US.

Our favorite kitty doesn't know the difference between Dungeons & Dragons and Castles & Crusades.

When is something officially and automatically "copyrighted" -- after each character is written? After each word? When the pen starts to move? When the whole thing is finished and the author puts the pen down? When he picks the pen up to write? Assume similar questions for digital media. I don't know the answers, but someone must have thought this through by now. It seems to me copyright has to include something essentially original, as well, and not all photos/digital images are worthy works of art, by a long shot.

I think taking someone else's picture for auction purposes is wrong, but not for the same reason you do -- because it cannot represent the item being sold. The number of times I've seen the Acaeum 1st print MM image up is probably beyond counting -- and most of them are 5ths on later interrogation.

To deep for me!!

Works in progress are protected by copyright, so if you steal anything, you've stolen it.

Easy.

On the other hand, I'm of mixed feelings about auction pictures.

Stephen

Nice auction, some common stuff in decent condition, but man, for those of us on slow internet connections, this listing is indeed laughable:

LOL...the incredible thing to me is, somebody paid $12.50 plus shipping for it!  Talk about throwing your $ in the trash.

Eh, figure since I just got outbid I would make a note of this one. Maybe the description is the reason why there were no serious bids until 2 hours before the end of the auction. 8O  If Guido would stop bidding on stuff he might be able to get the next part of his story out before Christmas.

What's funny about that one?

I'd guess that catalogs are pretty rare, given how often they just get tossed into the trash ;)

I sell a similar item (the "candid letter" that was put out by WotC marketing when they bought TSR), and I've sold a bunch of 'em:

I guess it's just me...to me the item your selling is significantly more rare. Actually, I've got about 20-25 of those 1981 catalogs piled up w/ all my B2's & X1's...I just keep them around to put together accurate Basic/Expert Sets with original paperwork, RPGA membership forms, etc. Maybe I should start selling them individually!

Well, for $0.99 I don't think the guy's too crazy. He'll probably sell more of those than he will B1's :P

Over the years I've sold a bunch of these in the $5 range....remember, the casual collector either doesn't have access to these or has never seen one before (since they came out 25 or so years ago...).  You should put a price on those catalogs and put them up for bid, you might be surprised!
