As far as the new 30th Anniversary book goes ... well, be prepared to read sideways.
It's a nice-looking book, and it's got some interesting product shots, but I'm really questioning the overall graphic-design decisions. The text for EVERY page is laid out at an angle ... that's right, EVERY page is purposefully crooked. Why, I don't know, but it must have seemed cool at the time. All I know is that my neck is sore ...
Overall, though, I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase. It IS a solid history of TSR/D&D, although there's about 50 too many essays from people I've never heard of.
