Greetings collectors, and I hope you can help.

I have the three original core books, and cannot identify which edition they are.

The Men and Magic bears the Sword and Shield Warrior, putting it between Third and Sixth edition.

It lacks a price, exempting Third+ through Fourth minus.

It has no inside cover printing reference, leaving out Fourth.

It has no Page 9 reference to Hobbits, leaving out Fifth.

It cannot be Sixth because the inside cover is white, not parchment color.

Can you tell me which edition they most likely belong to?

Using the principle of least happiness, I'd suggest 6th, mostly because of the Hobbits/Ents not being there.  Maybe a new 6th minus?  Although the color on these things seems to vary because of age/condition:

I have two fifth printing sets of drastically different color.  One has white inside covers and a parchmenty leathery look on the outside, the other has beige inside covers and almost a textured grid pattern on the outside.

Does anyone know if different 'textures' were used in the printing process, or am I seeing things?

Stupid question follows:

I presume that you don't have the box?  8O

I have another vague recollection (I'm never going to be known as Mr. Memory) that I reported a similar boxed OCE set to Scott which I subsequently sold.

And I think he said someone else had also reported this.  Maybe Scott can confirm this?

No box.

I figure it is most likely a sixth, but there was some doubt to me.

Safe valuation usually requires that all questionable items be assumed as 6th or thereabouts, but there have been some surprises along the way.

If you do find any oddities in this category, Stormber may be able to help you - especially if you have a scan.

I'll try to get one.

Even if it's Sixth it's still cool cuz I got it for free.
