Amazing! I have to admit I didn't know that the modern NWN game wasnt the first of its name! I guess these were probably not hugely common outside the US at that point?

NWN was put out in 1991 , and quote "The first graphic online AD&D game includes software to access America Online".
I doubt they were common outside the US.
