The art was rendered in
black and white acrylic and pencil on a prepared canvas board. It
was used as the cover for a gaming fan magazine, The Dungeoneer,
published in 1978 by Anshell miniatures. This sketch comes from
the artist's college days. It depicts a scene from The Arcane
Elders a serialized fantasy story by author J. Mark Hendricks. It
shows an encounter between the tale's two main characters Lute the bard
and Ralph the Hobbit (or halfling). The piece is dated 3/78 near
the artist's signature. The artist painted this in his private
studio in the basement of the old stone church on the Spring Arbor
College campus (now Spring Arbor University). The church was
demolished in the late '80s as part of the building expansion of the
Spring Arbor Free Methodist church. The publisher, Anshell
miniatures, purchased the magazine from Paul earlier in 1978.
Issue 8 is one of only two issues published by Chuck Anshell before he
joined Judges Guild and took the magazine with him.
Condition: The painting is in excellent condition. The corners
show a slight bit of wear from handling while in storage. The
pigment used is an earth pigment (Mars black) and is not subject to
significant fading. |
