Any advice on ways to protect dungeon modules and magazine issues other than comic book sleeves?

The slick feel of that type of cellophane irritates the hell out of me.
(Think: fingernails on chalkboard or crinkling Styrofoam).

I have a large collection of The Dragon, a good number of dungeon modules, and new collection of Starlog.
I'd like a way to protect them and be able to read them without using that type of plastic.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Keith

Hmmm.... There are two types of plastic used for comic storage that I know of and probably more.  One feels crisp and krinkly like old shrink wrap and the other has a softer feel.  I personally prefer the softer kind made by Ultra Pro.  Magazine bags with backer boards really are the best way to store Dungeon and Dragon mags in my opinion.   8)

You could try mylar sleeves or ultra pro magazine top loaders, both are expensive at 80 cents each or so

That might be a good option.
I could actually store most of the mags and modules in plastic and transfer the ones I'm currently reading to some type of Mylar sleeve.

Thanks!

The 3ml or thicker sleeves don't have that crinkly feel you hate from the ones less than 3 ml thickness, more of a softer, slick feel.

I use the thicker ones for my personal collection, the thinner ones on stuff I sell.

I use Ultra Pro bags & boards, but I know what you mean, it's not the easiest if you just want to pick up a magazine to read.  Are binders an option?

I draw the line at collecting... D&D beach towels.

We only have one good comic book shop here.
If they don't sell the thicker sleeves where could I get them?
Online? Or would a chain store (e.g. Hobby Lobby) have them?

I've been thinking about that, too.
But I don't want a binder that would crush/crinkle the binding of the magazines and modules.

Mars posted once about a bunch of Dragon mags he found in a couple binders, I forget how they were held in place, but I don't think there was any damage.  I probably would consider this storage more for reading/play/common items than collectibles.

Bags Unlimited (online) is a good source.

Agreed.  I also like BCW Supplies and The 2 Buds.  I've used all of them at different times.  Just comparison shop as usual (shipping costs can be considerable!).

Areas of interest/knowledge: Harn, WFRP, Ars Magica, anything BRP based such as CoC, Runequest, Pendragon and all their related games

Thanks for all the advice.
I went to Staples and Office Depot today, but did not see any good binders.
The comic shop was covered up with kids playing some card game.
I'm tall and fat and couldn't even get in the door.

I may order an Ultra Pro sleeve or two to see if that's what I need.
Since I don't have a man-cave anymore (the mother-in-law lives with us now *sigh*),
my collection is partially "stored away" on bookcases around the house.

So what I do is pick a module or magazine that catches my eye, and take them with me to read during work.
As Carlin used to say, "It's my job.  I'm going to do it my way." :)

I have a box I specifically use to carry several mags when I am traveling on vacation and need reading material but want to make sure my stuff is safe.  8)

I use these kind of storage boxes on my bookcases.
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50022354/#

But modules and magazines are in the those thin (<3 ml, per Mike's description), the ones that drive me bat-crap crazy.

So what kind of box do you use?
Something lightweight would be great, something that I could throw in my backpack.

Thanks,
Keith

I store all my magazines in boxes that look like comic book storage boxes.  I bought mine from my FLGS.

http://www.bcwsupplies.com/products/magazine-boxes/

My portable box is some stupid little box that once held teaching supplies  It's something like 10x11x2.  I can stuff five mags or so in there, add a little padding, and they travel just fine.   8)   Unfortunately, I don't know if something like that is for sale.   :?

I think I can scrounge up a box of some sort.
I didn't even think about scavenging school supplies.

BTW, what do y'all do if you have a module or magazine where the middle pages have come loose from the staples.
Is there a good way to re-staple the pages back in?

In this case the paper of the center page is probably torn. If you don't mind tape, you can cover the torn part, then unfold the staples & punch them through the taped portion. I wouldn't try to sell it that way however.
