Dark and Damp.

Right, this is kind of connected to my earlier rusty staples questions... I keep some of my collection in bags (with boards) in cardboard boxes (old wine boxes actually) in the cupboard. Am I actually damaging it? I know that in the dark is good (so OK there) but I have no idea what the relative humidity in there is. There is a radiator close by but I hear recommendations of 50% or less humidity being important. Perhaps I am worrying unnecessarily? Will they go all mouldy? And what is 'foxing' anyway? Hey Red_bus, you certainly worry alot about your items! How come your so worried? I certainly think bagging and boarding them + putting them in a box is a good idea. I have my collection in a storage where its dark and damp and I see no problems there. Take a easy and don't kill yourself worrying about these things. Enjoy collecting and not make it a nightmakre Cool

There ya go Red_bus! Don't worry so much about many of these things. You'll worry yourself to death. Enjoy this hobby. Its suppose to be fun not a headache. One good call you did was to bag and board your items. That will help protect and preserve your items. I know SOME collectors who don't even bother bagging and boarding there rares like a lost tamoa, dwarven 1st, etc Shocked

PS. You put your items laying down on top of each other in a box or standing upright?

standing up! better i think? although i have run out of room in the cupboard and there are piles (of the less rare stuff) lying around the flat and some more on shelves too... obviously the solution is to get a larger flat...

When it comes to bagging your modules, use Mylar bags. They are better for archival purposes. If you use plastic bags, change them every couple years. Here is a website that explains a little more about paper preservation: http://bcemylar.com/paperdocs.html Ð

Cardboard boxes do not protect against water damage, and they can attract vermin. I'd recommend buying large "tupperware" style tubs for holding all your bagged and boarded items. You will thank yourself later on when your storage closet gets a busted pipe or a leak over your stuff.

Don't put your collection in your home unless you have collectible insurance. I don't think you want to lose some items due to a fire. Put them in a storage unit. Of course also avoid smoking as that makes the items reek of cigarettes.

I actually picked up some tupperware tubs this weekend and I would like to report rave reviews. These are sturdy and stackable. I think there is a greater risk of Nuclear attack then waterpipes bursting over my collection but they are pretty safe for sure. Very Happy

Nothing is much worse then the bottom of a cardboard box giving out while carrying it Mad

. The only thing I dont like is I bought some with semirounded corners so I have to keep my goodies from getting warped if they are pressed into the outter corners. Very Happy

Oh I cant help it I had to do it, No Dont twist my arm stop stop OK OK. I have gone to the point of Cataloging the entire collection that lists, Publisher, date copywrited, date printed, world it belongs too, Version, Edition, Cover condition and grade, overall condition and grade. Price I paid for it, Year I bought it, Price I would ask for it, price I would like to get for it. Person I bought it from and address, Person I sell them too and address, Price I sell them for. ISBN numbers, and Catalog number that TSR used to identify it. Then I burnt it to CD and when a change occures, I make the change and then Reburn it. Shocked

Sorry Now I did it, now he will be pulling them all out to create a database in Microsoft Works, and managing his items. As far as storage, ( I keep em on a book shelf, in a closet or next to the bed. ) I changed my mind this is a fun way of still participating in Roleplaying, so I am now more looking to sell what I have in order to try to get better condition stuff for use if I do play or just to resell it for the fun of it. In the process I amy get a nice collection out of it too. Very Happy
