Just glancing through Men & Magic, to the un-numbered page before page 4, I noticed that the foreword on this page is actually spelt forward.

Wondered if this was just a play on the word and appears in each printing?

I think it's just a typo.

I'm not sure if you were trying to be humourous, but "spelt" is a correct alternative form of "spelled" in British and Canadian English.  (In American English, it's just a type of wheat.)

Not to mention that in order to be technically correct, it should be "foreword", not "foreward" or "forward".

Some of us in the US still use what you call "alternative" forms. Leapt instead of "leaped", etc. Must come from reading too many British authors, eh?

And, of course, "foreword" is the same as "prologue", and "afterword" is the same as "epilogue"...

Yes, I am English.

No, I was not trying to be humorous (a word frequently mis-spelled as humourous...).  Wink

I was actually attempting to direct a question at someone who has a copy of this printing of Men & Magic - or any printing of it, for that matter.

Just wondered if in other copies the spelling appeared as the correct 'foreword' and not 'forward,' as it does in mine.

Not sure about Men & Magic, but that's definitely the way it's spelled on the flag of the great state of Wisconsin.   Very Happy

The misspelling persisted through the various prints of the OCE, as my OCE has said misspelling.

P.S. I just noticed that the OP spelled "foreword" correctly to begin with.  That's what I get for typing late at night.  Sorry about that. Smile

You must be thinking of south-central Wisconsin, where Geraldo Rivera was punched out at a KKK rally.

The rest of Wisconsin is the birth place of the Democratic Party.
