Hi,
I was looking at the Gencon Indy info, and noticed that they have had to change the charity that they donate to, as the Christian Children's Fund won't accept any donations which have been "tainted" by D&D.
Cheers,
Malc |

Fisher House is an exceptional charity...the same concept as the "Ronald McDonald House" that McDonald's builds near children's hospital so family members can stay nearby, Fisher house does the same for military families who have a loved one in a VA hospital. So if someone else doesn't want the money, Fisher House is an excellent choice. And since many, many military men play RPGS (I learned D&D from the son of a Navy man who also served in the Navy) it seems quite appropriate!

I thought it interesting that GenCon chose to just put a line through the previous charity and note about the 'D&D Taint' rather than just change the page entirely. Was this their choice or the choice of the charity? |

I do not know what to make of that -- if it is so, then there is some major hypocrisy / irony in action. That was Gary Gygax's charity, the one his family asked donations be sent to, when he passed. Did they refuse? |

Dragonsfoot Link. It was posted at TLG as well, but I can't locate it there as easily. |

Guess some people still believe D&D is evil, the work of the devil, etc.
Does GenCon work with a specific charity every year or was this chosen as an homage to Gygax? |

Here is a website indicating the change.
They apparently had no problem with the ORIGINS charity auction though:
| Link wrote: | Origins Auction
Over the years, the Origins auction has provided hundreds of attendees with the money to pay all or part of their costs in attending Origins, as well as extra dollars to buy stuff in the exhibitor hall.
For collectors, the Origins auction can be one of the most anticipated events of the year, with the hope of once more obtaining that rare item, or getting a bargain on something wanted for a long time.
In 2006, the Origins auction’s management was taken over by Troll and Toad, who has moved this into the modern era by adding auctions for collectible card games, collectible miniatures, and video games.
So, between now and Origins, gather together your unwanted gaming and sci-fi/comic-related items, whether it’s a unopened Fallen Empires box, that copy of Caylus that you never get around to playing, a stack of Ars Magica RPGs, or a box of Star Wars action figures, and make sure that you bring these to the famous Origins Auction for 2008.
There are two ways to sell – no risk with the auction store, or paying a small fee and to put stuff in the live auction. There is no entry fee for items going into the store. The auction store is great for items you want displayed all weekend, and the live auction is for rare items, more expensive things, collections, etc. Also, you can stop by the auction at anytime to check on what items you’ve sold, or get a payout for items.
There will also be a Charity Auction this year at Origins. The charity auction will be for Gary Gygax's favorite charity, the Christian Children's Fund. Anyone willing to donate items to this cause will be able to do so during item registration. All proceeds from the charity auction will be going to this fund.
To see the rules for the auction, or to pre-register your items, please visit http://www.livegameauctions.com/Originsauction.jsp |
Hmm... I am confused. |

Eh, it's just ignorance. I'm sure not one person associated with them has a clue what in hell Dungeon and Dragons is anyway. Frankly, Fisher House is a much better charity anyway, and is more "gaming related" since many of our servicemen are gamers. Plus they are a very well run charity..not a lot of waste or overhead ( I prefer charities with "zero balance", ie all the money is given to the charity and not to nebulous other costs, administration or individuals). There is nothing worse than being family of a soldier seriously wounded and then having to somehow travel thousands of miles to be near them.....Fisher House handles all that up to buying airplane tickets and securing other lodging should the local Fisher House be full. The Brooke Rehabilitation Clinic in Texas is supported by Fisher House, and they do superb work there. If the other guys don't want the money, no problem I say.
