I didn't know about these AD&D items, until they were up for auction. I think they are basically worthless. I want to know, however, are they rare, at least? Are these up for sale often? Any other facts / information on these items?

I actually have a copy of the 2nd edition Preview book. It has some cool info in it about 2nd edition and some FAQ type stuff.

The DM assistants are fairly rare; they were sluggish from what I heard, and since this was in the day and age before patches and common Internet usage, their practical value to the DM during play was fleeting.  From what I've been able to see, Vol 2 is harder to find than Vol 1 (probably fewer created).

The promo was a free handout from the beginning of 1989 or so, it's actually kind of interesting.  Haven't seen one in years, though.

Another 2nd ed. preview on eBay:

I wonder if this receives some bids. Seller states it's from Dragon magazine. I have asked him from which number. Anybody can confirm this?

I think the DM Assistants are a bit on the rarer side - it is fairly tough to find old computer games in their original boxes with manuals etc.  Although with that said there aren't too many people who are really looking for them either.

They were produced for both the PC and Commodore 64 (maybe even the Atari) which means that they were mass produced.  I have a set for the C64 which runs okay but was never used for gaming.  I think most people who bought these had the D&D rules already and new them well enough not to have to use the programs.

As far as being slow to run, back when they were put out, most things were slow to run and that was the norm.  Ah back in the day when you would turn on your computer start to load a program and then go for a coffee hoping it would be ready to go when you got back.

Hey, we used a teletype style terminal with "basic" language back in high school. We got some 64s my junior year. What a trip... Shocked But the only people in the "computer lab" were the geeks. Now they are running Oracle, Microsoft, Apple, etc.
