It would be extra cool if players could store their characters electronically and print them out at any location so there is no "I forgot my character" problem.

I suspect from what I saw there will be.  It would be nice to be able to generate characters and keep them online and move them from game to game.

Thanks.

While this tool does allow you to create characters it does so with a very flat form.  By that I mean it may be online but is really no different to a sheet of paper.  There are no real smarts built in.

I am hoping (although not expecting Rolling Eyes ) WotC to design something that is a lot more integrated with far more functionality .....

It does a few things like adds the proper ability bonuses to your skills and a few others.  I'm sure it won't be as fancy as what they are offering, lol

Thanks for the link.  I'll check it out!

The problem with similar things up to now has been that they either make mistakes with the rules or are not updated to fully meet all the reqirements of an ongoing 3.5 edition game.

A real, working character generator would not have errors and would not be limited to only standard races, classes, etc....

I want a feature that says, "You wanna be a giant badger paladin?  No problem!  Here are the stats."

I didn't see any specific 4th ed swag.  The line was always so long though at the WOTC site I never bothered to get in it to find out what was being given away.

Dammit, man, how are we to start 4e collecting if you don't do it for us?

Looking back on 3e, did anything 3e become valuable apart from the GenCon DCC 12.5?  Any WotC or third-party rarities?  Will the last products produced for 3e become rare?

Rappan Athuk #3 is rare. The GenCon release (multi-autographed) PHB is also rare/valuable.

Return Temple Elemental Evil will get you over cover. I have a feeling the boxed Rappan Athuk set is going to get very, very pricey now...only 1000 copies anyway, and now with 4th ed coming no reason to reprint it.

If you ever wanted to buy some 3rd ed stuff next year will be the time...lots of companies will dump their stock right before the summer.  In a similar vein, I doubt you see a lot of 3rd party 3rd edition released in the next year except for what is already in the pipe.

City of Brass and Dungeon Crawl Classics #51 Castle Whiterock maybe the last big bang products for 3.x before 4th Ed.

I figure I'll grab the adventure thats released by WotC in early 2008 to see just what 4th Ed is going to be about.

How are companies supposed to start writing for 4th edition when it is, like 9 months away from publication?

I assume that licensed companies will have early copies of the rules.  The 4e announcement was leaked by an Israeli RPG company that is translating 4e and/or writing adventures for 4e.  One can infer that other companies with a need-to-know will get 4e rules early.

Your question should obviously be answered by someone who is not me.   Very Happy

So what you're saying is that I should just crumble up my character sheet and forget even bothering with rolling for damage? Laughing

I thought it was mentioned at some point that WotC wanted to get rid of the OGL for 4th edition.  Was this ever confirmed or denied?

The wording is a bit tricky (I've seen one post by a WotC employee saying it will aupport an OGL, while another saying it will support the OGL), but the basic answer is yes, there will be some form of OGL.

(The compiled FAQ is quite useful for these things, though a tad on the long side.)

According to WOTC's FAQ, that's exactly what the "Character Vault" will let players and DMs do, with a catch.  Want to hear what the catch is?

In order to use any given rulebook with your stored characters, you have to prove you own the rulebook by logging the serial number from your copy of the rulebook (and paying a fee, of course).  Serial numbers can't be shared between accounts.

Got that? Borrowing rulebooks will be against the (online) rules.  (Sounds more like a Hackmaster rule, doesn't it?)  Also, buying used rulebooks becomes something of a crapshoot, if you're interested in online play.

Also, the Character Vault won't support third-party rules.

You know, I'm getting the impression that WOTC's marketing geniuses spent a lot of time obsessing about customer lock-in.

That's actually a feature the D20 license forbids non-WOTC software from including, because non-WOTC D20 products aren't allowed to include rules for generating ability scores.  WOTC has been basically reserving that for themselves, without really doing it themselves.  Apparently, they were waiting until they figured out how to maximize the profits.
