Getting ready for this Saturday's draft.  Mike, could you scoot your chair slightly to the left?  My hidden camera has a good view of your wide receivers, but I need more info on your running backs.  Thanks.

You stole about every pick of mine last week....so here's a tidbit. I'm picking ALL Atlanta Falcons and Redskins, so just act accordingly and pick those up before I do...... Twisted Evil

I posted this invitation in the Random Thoughts thread last week but this might be the more appropriate venue (though I am not ruling out posting a follow up in the Random Thoughts area later in the week   Smile).

Yahoo's Survival Football

All you have to do is pick 1 winning team each week.  The challenge is that you can only pick a team once.  So picking the Patriots in week 1 takes the Patriots off your board the rest of the season.  For anyone who is interested:

The NFL regular season kicks off one week from tomorrow for those in North America (Thursday September 4th).

Hi Mike -

Looks like we need one more in the Luddite league. Have you got someone lined up, or do we need to do some hard sell?

Luddite Leaguers;

Smarmy has been given the last spot in the league...whoops, I was waiting for him to join and forgot to send him an invitation.   Embarassed   Smarmy is a vet of fantasy leagues so don't let him trick you into thinking he is a "newbie".

I figured out how to fiddle the Keeper and draft settings.  We are going to draft "professionally" which means in inverse order of last year's finish (That means your Cubes draft last!!!).  Also have activated the "Keeper" setting...each returning team will be allowed to keep ONE player on your roster from last year, and as a result all returning teams (7) will draft AFTER all new teams (3).

So the draft order will look like:

1. New team
2. New team
3. New team
4. Dungeon Dwellers
5. Rogaloron
6. Big Lugs
7. Cone of Cold
8. Tegel Shrews
9. Iguanas
10. Cubes

For the returning teams (4-10) I will need your Keeper player (basically, your first round player) before Saturday morning to enter them.  Remember the Luddite League RBs are NOT as important as in some other leagues; QBs and WRs can put your team in the championship if you don't get lucky enough to have an LT or AP on your roster.  Yes Marquis Colston and Brandon Marshall were more valuable than Adrian Peterson last year.  Many league's have an over-reliance on the RB and there are so few #1 starting RB's each year in the NFL with the new "split back" options most teams take, that there are literally 2-3 RBs every year that dominate leagues to the exclusion of all all players. Here was the top 25 last year in the Luddites:

Tom Brady
(NE - QB)    516
Randy Moss
(NE - WR)    378
Tony Romo
(Dal - QB)     374
Brian Westbrook
(Phi - RB)     359
LaDainian Tomlinson
(SD - RB)    355
Peyton Manning
(Ind - QB)     344
Brett Favre
(NYJ - QB)    328
Drew Brees
(NO - QB)    325
Derek Anderson
(Cle - QB)    325
Ben Roethlisberger
(Pit - QB)    323
Matt Hasselbeck
(Sea - QB)     304
Reggie Wayne
(Ind - WR)    302
Terrell Owens
(Dal - WR)     299
Carson Palmer
(Cin - QB)     298
Braylon Edwards
(Cle - WR)    292
T.J. Houshmandzadeh
(Cin - WR)     291
Larry Fitzgerald
(Ari - WR)    288
Chad Johnson
(Cin - WR)     283
Kurt Warner
(Ari - QB)    280
Marques Colston
(NO - WR)     274
Brandon Marshall
(Den - WR)     272
Wes Welker
(NE - WR)     270
Clinton Portis
(Was - RB)    264
Joseph Addai
(Ind - RB)    263
Jay Cutler
(Den - QB)  256

To put it in perspective, I'll probably hold Brady over LT in the Luddite league (I had both players)....if returning teams want to see their roster from last year, click "manager" list then your manager name, it will pull up all your past leagues, from that you can get your last year's roster.  Good luck, email me if you have any questions.!

Wow... AP not in the top 25 for Luddite scoring last year.

Who to keep? I have Moss, Chad, Westbrook and AP. I can only keep one you say? Bugger.

As well as QBs and WRs.... make sure you have a decent long range kicker. Lots of points available there too.

I don't mind drafting in 10th.... sometimes having the 10th/11th picks is better than having 1st and 21st.

Yep I agree, sometimes hard to take 20 spots between picks.

Luddites can just email me their keeper by midnight Friday...I'll also email this to everyone through the site...

Bugger.  I've been researching things the wrong way round.  I must have misread something, damn internet drafts.  Now I have to rethink my whole strategy!?   Autodraft, yeah that's it....

Ouch: seven top players already gone!  I don't wanna go first.

The Cones of Light are going to blind me, tie me up, and take my pocket change.

There will be some VERY good RBs available with the 1st three picks...basically, the top three rated RBs it looks like...... Wink

I agree with Paul.
Last minute change to the biggest part of the leagues rules makes all previous work done useless piles of garbage.
I wish we could simply use the rules that we used last year, as was posted when you were asking for more managers to participate in the luddittes this year.
If we all want a keeper league next year, let the team managers vote this year to make it a keeper league next year.

Especially when you already have Moss, or Westbrook...........
Can you say Fantasy domination from the start?
Its like getting THREE first rounds picks.

The new guys are bascially toast.
What players do they get to keep from last season?
If none, then they are getting one first round pick and ALL the old team managers will have TWO first round picks.
Think on it please.

A keeper league is fine, but not the way this seems to be heading.

I mentioned it in an August 7th post on this thread when I announced the return of the league:

I also think I'm going to enable a "Keeper" function allowing everyone to keep one member from their team from last season....

Since this isn't a for money league, there really isn't any point in letting every team have a vote...there's nothing on the line except pride.  I let the members in the league I've been running 15 years vote on changes, but they are paying several hundred dollars each for the privilege.

It's not any different from having the 7th pick in the draft....and having LT, AP, Marion Barber, and Westbrook still available at that pick...which they will be from what I'm seeing.  I had the best player in the league last year (Brady) and still got my ass kicked both playoff games.  The team in my money league that had Emmitt Smith all through the early 90s never won a playoff game either.  One player does not a champion make.

Basically a "keeper" league is just to promote continuity and reward continued participation.  BTW most keeper leagues (my money league included) allow multiple keeper picks at various positions...!

Even with that, two years ago my money league had a brand spanking new team come in, with no holdovers, and 27 players off the table (each returning team gets three keepers, no more than one from each position), and proceeding to beat the living tar out of the old pros and win the league.  If you're good, you're good, and you don't need excuses....

First. I know what a keeper league is, but thanks for the explanation.
I have been playing FFB for a while too.

Second, in that money league, did that guy have to start out with three less players than all the other teams had before the draft began, or was he allowed to draft three straigth players first?
If he was not allowed to obtain some players before the regular draft began, then that guy is either exceedingly lucky, or the best manager of FFB I have ever heard of.

Third, I disagree, it is different.

Actual draft Picks 1-3 pick will pick a top 8-10 player, as the top 7 are already gone from the board. (potentially)
Perhaps LT and AP and a couple of other players will be left.
So, yes they will no doubt get a top 10 NFL pick there.
But that is not my main point at all.

Pick no. 4 will Then have TWO straight picks in the first round (His keeper, then his first round pick), no. 5 the same, no. 6 the same, no. 7th the same etc. until.
The last pick (Winner of last years championship) will in effect have THREE Straight picks at his first opportunity to draft, not two.
Obviously his keeper, then whomever he picks at 10th and 11th.

He will (potentially) end up with 3 of the top 18 players in the NFL on his team. Shocked  Laughing
The next team will have 3 of the top 19, and the next team will have 3 of the top 20, and so on until you get back to the new guys.
Who once they have picked players for the second round, will have just 2 of the top 27 players in the NFL.

Please don’t tell me you cannot see the lopsidedness of that.
That IMO is absolute domination in any sort of FFB draft.

At that point (top of the third round) the top tier players at WR, QB, and RB will be gone.
The next level of players is far below the first tier at each position.
Anyone who has played FFB for 14 years like you must know this.

Who would not love to have a first round pick AND a top 7 keeper too at the end of round one, while 3 of the 10 teams in your league will only have one top 10 player?
I would do that all day any day.
It is EXACTLY like having TWO first round picks for all the old teams.
And the new guys just get ONE first round pick.

All three of the new teams will be one player behind us all the way through the draft.
At the last round they will have to take two picks each to round out a complete roster.
Or have an extra three team one round extended draft after the old teams finish the draft.

Am I the only one that can see all this?
Can no one else see the lopsided unfairness of it all?

As for the advanced notice about making it a Keeper League.

Quote:

And not another word was heard about that thought again until last night.....
two days before the draft we get the new rule..........
No discussion, just the new rule.
Your league, your rules.
I have no problem with that, but....
Still does not help the new guys, who get to keep nothing.

I want fair compitition leagues to play in, not domination leagues where 3 of the 10 teams are at a great disadvantage from the beginning.
Even in a free league it seems to me anyone would want that.
