NFL Fantasy Football - Acaeum Collectors League

i watched that bills v browns game. i gotta hand it to them guys playing in such weather conditions. awesome. that would never happen in the UK man!

the patriots v jets game. i actually thought the jets really had a go myself. i was really pleased with their effort. the defence certainly made life difficult for the NE offence to do anything effectively - and yea ok, the weather did play a part, but you cant put it all down to the weather!

dallas....i thought they were piss-poor. the eagles defence had a great game, but dallas didnt really do much either. TO kept whining for a pass, but each time he got one, he made an unholy mess of it. not good enough.
frankly, if it wasnt for jason witten, the offence would have ground to a halt and it would have been one of the worst offensive performances i have ever seen.

anyway.

And Jason Witten is a stud..considering yesterday he just broke all Cowboy records for a TE in a season (yardage and catches)...amazing dude.

Believe it or not, I sweated yesterday's game back on Friday when I heard it was going to snow. Snow is the great equalizer; it kills the talent on both sides and drags it down to a game of mostly luck. As a rule of thumb, the team who has the most turnovers loses.
I desperately want to see Brady crack Manning's TD record, but the weather over the next two weeks may preclude that. This year.

Another heartbreaker was Brian Westbrook....taking a knee instead of scoring a sure TD, because then the Eagles could just run out the clock. Wonder how many teams lost because they needed that TD???

I'm in a league, and had a playoff game against a team with Westbrook. It was a close match, and I was up by 4 or 5. Everyone was pretty much done except for Westbrook. He broke out on the run, my season was done.... until he flopped down on the one yard line. I won by 2.

Except.... I was playing the Pats defence. I'd won for all of about 12 hours, up until there was a score correction and they reduced the Pats score by 3 (due to some error in the Yahoo stats). So instead of a 122-120 win, I lost by 1.

Them's the breaks.... in the two leagues that matter (Acaeum and Luddite) I had two wins so am playing for 5th in the Acaeum, and the Luddite championship.

(Thought I'd see you next week Mike in the Luddites, but you'll have to settle for 3rd this year. And sorry for whipping you in the Acaeum playoffs - Hester couldn't catch a break, the Vikes never gave him a chance to run it back).

i have witten on my team and he has had a superb season. i was watching a clip the other day of a catch he had, WHAM, got hit, off came his helmet, and off he went on another 20-30 yards.....awesome effort - was most impressed with the guy. no wonder romo picks him out so much - look at the size of the guy! for what its worth i think he is 10 times more worthwhile than that TO guy. i would rather have a good-solid team player anyday, than a maverick WR who blows hot and cold and disrupts to the extent TO does.

that said, i am really pleased i joined this acaeum league thing. i have watched it a helluva lot more and certainly learnt a ton more than i did know. i find i enjoy it more now that i understand a lot more of the technical things.

still love the games in the snow tho - that is amazing Smile

Glad you are having fun with the fantasy football Al. This is actually the first time I have ever played fantasy football myself. Did some baseball in the past but never football. It is much more enjoyable.

Watching those guys play football in frigid temperatures with snow blowing all around is something else. I played football a couple of times in conditions like that and it is a lot of fun but damn it hurts a lot when you get hit.

If you really want to see something you should check out the Fog Bowl. I tried to find a youtube video of it but didnt find one.

Back in '88 the Philadelphia Eagles played the Chicago Bears in an NFC playoff game. During the first half a fog bank rolled in and covered the field. You could hardly see anything on the field but they kept playing though. Craziest thing I ever saw....er didn't see. Very Happy

Hester was feast or famine...enjoyd some 30-40 pt games from him when people were stupid enough to kick to him, other weeks he got shut down. Dumb move on my part was leaving Stecker on the bench for Young at RB...I would have won (25 pts vs 3 pts, only lost by 10.....). Ah well. Now that Steven Jackson is back (looked GREAT against the Pack this weekend) you have a pretty good shot, Mike. Good Luck!

The "tuck rule" 2002 playoff game with the Pats vs Raiders comes to mind....great football game, under great football conditions (basically snowing the entire game). To think, I was actually rooting for the Pats to win back then...sheesh....now I'm rooting for Brady not to break the TD record!

I've run a "money" league for 14 years now. It's a frikken war there. Old grudges, sacred rivalries, sheer unmitigated dirty tricks and hatred (some teams pick up players just to screw other teams over that need a position player for a week), name calling...a guy actually left because the level of profanity in the group emails had reached a level that he wasn't comfortable with.... Shocked

. And if you make a bad decision at a position (like the guy who played Brady did this week) you will be unmercifully ripped to pieces by everyone. But it's fun.

We have ten teams, and four are originals, they plan their entire year around draft day....a couple of times they've had to draft by conference call (we have one guy who has lived in Alabama the last few years who drafts by computer, using a video feed). Side bets abound, with the usual prizes being cases of beer for certain games or if certain teams reach the playoffs or win. Sometimes it's money...you can win more money than the actual championship on some of the side bets. The best side bet was a guy having to mow another guy's yard...in a diaper....for losing a head to head matchup. Very enjoyable!

A DIAPER! That is classic!
That's what betting is all about. Money is nice and all, but it's the humiliating things that rock. When the Pats beat the Steelers back in the '02 playoffs, I made a bet with one of the guys who worked for me (came from Pitt) that the Pats would win. The loser had to wear a dress to work. He lost. I still have the pictures.

The Bremerton Yardbirds blasted their way into Monster Bowl VII this past week, defeating their arch-rivals, the Bellevue Christians.

Next week, we take on the Wilsonville Doomguard for the championship.

Both teams are undefeated in the Monster Bowl, with five wins between them. The Yardbirds defeated the Doomguard for the first time earlier this season...a rare loss for the Doomguard in Wilsonville's dreaded Mordor Stadium.

My wife's team lost the consolation bracket game (which determines draft order...5th or 6th place...because Westbrook took a dive on the goal line.

Romo's non-performance almost cost the Yardbirds a playoff win...except that the other team had Owens.

BTW, I'll give a little love to my high school Alma Mater, Trinity High School in Euless, who will play for the Texas state championship this weekend. They won it two years ago, then got beat by HS powerhouse Southlake Carrol last year. They have gotten a lot of international pub the last few years because they perform a "Haka" before and after the game (the city and school boasts a very large contingent of Tongan and Samoan players). Go to Youtube and put in the search "Euless Trinity Haka" and you can find one of the many postings on the subject...basically it's a traditional polynesian war dance that some students a few years ago adapted as sort of a cheer and rallying cry. It's caught on so much they have been featured on National news and a story in the Wall Street Journal. I have to admit seeing the dance perfomed live is very intimidating, very primal and primitive, and I can see how the boys get really fired up afterwards.

They have only lost once this year..to Odessa Permian (Friday Night Lights team), but avenged the loss in the playoffs by destroying the unbeaten Mojo. They dominated on defense only allowing an average of 9 pts a game, with four shutouts. It's hard to run past those 300 lbs Tongan boys...

It's interesting how things change. When I graduated Trinity in 1981, we had one black player on the football team. Oh, and we SUCKED. A 5-6 win season was a GREAT year. Now, all there are a handful of token whiteys on the team as the gigantic polynesian players have dominated the lineup the last few years. Tongans and Samoans are a.....LARGE ethnic group....a few years ago they had a offensive lineman that was 6'3 and 320 lbs....! Their star player this year is another defensive player, Mao Leota:

The QB of our championship team a couple years ago is now the starting QB for UTEP. Trevor Vittatoe led all freshman QB's in the nation this year in passing yardage!

Well, enough love. I wish them luck against Converse Judson (another traditional Texas HS football powerhouse) at the Alamodome this weekend...here is a link to the offical Trojan website, so any non-Texans can see the incredible lengths we go to here in Texas when it comes to our "national" sport. There's not another state in the US that is HS football crazy as Texas...(the website averages over 100,000 hits a month...mindboggling!)

John, that fog bowl thing is fab! that is excellent stuff. thats one thing i have to say i really admire about these NFL guys. barring lightning, they play the game. i wish our football over here was more like that. i think you would give them a damn sight more respect for it.

i remember a snow game many years ago. the pats won 3-0 but i cant remember who they played. that game was most enjoyable too!

My 3 bets for the year are almost within my grasp. Welker as the best Pats receiver, undefeated for 2007, and a Lombardi for the case. Muahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!
The media is making a huge deal out of Jessica Simpson showing up at the Cowboys game to see her sweetie Tony Homo fall apart. Man, they will seize on anything they can, and make up things if they can't.

In the Acaeum Collector's League, it's bclarkies Dragons vs. smarmy1's Smarmy Shrinkwraps. In the Luddite league, amazingly enough, it is my Screaming Iguanas vs. mdr003's Gelatinous Cubes. I am not statistically favored to win, but I have learned over the past few weeks that it’s pretty much a crapshoot. No, what I meant to say is that skilled manipulation of players pays off! Wink
