What is this worth?

Hello, a friend of mine died recently and his wife asked me to go through some of his things. He had a collection of Judges Guild stuff, including games, manuals and books. I cataloged it, but many of the books are sealed so I don't know the dates on most of it. Just wondering if I emailed the catalog to some of you on this forum if you could give her an idea of what it's worth to put on e-bay or sell to an individual.

i will try and help you if you want. i've had quite a lot of JG stuff over the years, so can prb give you a good idea.

trouble is though, certain items, the printings DO vary the prices wildly, but hey i will give it a shot if you want.

Scans or digital pictures would help also.
The value of most gaming items varies wildly depending on condition, and I did notice that you mentioned that many of them are still sealed. That can be a plus if it looks like the original shrink-wrap.

Interesting lot, though more of a Traveller collection than a Judges Guild collection.

There's some good stuff there. Azhanti High Lightning might be a nice score, particularly if it's in good shape. I saw some other items that piqued my interest, too.

I'd consider sending a PM to a member here who uses the ID of ... wait for it ... Traveller. Smile

He is our default go-to-guy for the Traveller mythos.

For Judges Guild consultation, I'm sure Al and Shane (Plaag) can point you down the right path.

Fifth Frontier War seems to come up less often than Azhanti and should get you at least $50 (again depending on condition). The Striker box normally goes for $15 - $20. Most of the Judges Guild Traveller modules and supplements go for about $3 - $5. They are very common. You might do well selling them all in a lot.

As for the GDW stuff it is all pretty common but a nice Traveller box set can get you $15 or $20 usually. The supplements and adventures you have are also very common. High Passage....dunno about that one. All I have seen on Ebay recently were BIN's for about $5 or they were priced so high no one bid on them. As for the JTAS compliations, you should be able to get $15 - $25 for them I would think.

I looked through your list. Judges Guild Traveller items aren't especially valuable. There are plenty of them out there in shrink. I would guesstimate about $5 each for the shrink wrapped stuff, possibly $10 for the four book sealed package. The Referee's Screen I can get new on ebay for $2.50. The reason these aren't especially valuable is that the majority of Traveller players preferred GDW's published Traveller materials over Judges Guild. So much so that all sectors and subsectors Judges Guild produced have been declassified as canon, meaning they are no longer an official part of the Traveller universe.

An Interesting tidbit regarding the Referee's Screen. That screen is for pre-revised Classic Traveller, and Judges Guild never made a 2d printing screen. I have one, but I also have a copy of pre-revised Classic Traveller as well as my revised edition and The Traveller Book.

Now...let's take a look at the other stuff.

Azhanti High Lightning, if it's in original shrinkwrap, will fetch a good price. Most complete copies, which include Supplement 5: Lightning Class Cruisers, will get around $50, and that's for an open copy.

Fifth Frontier War will net about $25, perhaps more. The Traveller boardgames aren't terribly common, but they are all pretty good.

The computer game I have not seen offered on ebay. It's on floppy and not on CD, so it's not going to be all that easy to sell, given that most computers offered for sale these days do not have floppy disk drives. Further, it runs under DOS, and with modern computers, might require a utility to slow down the speed to a level where the game can be played. The last thing is that the game, as well as Megatraveller II: Quest For The Ancients is available as abandonware on the Internet.

Striker is very popular with Traveller gearheads because of the included design system for weapons and equipment. In fact, Striker was revamped into Striker II for MegaTraveller, and the design system heavily revised and released as Fire, Fusion, and Steel for Traveller: The New Era. That set should net at least $15, possibly more. I would have to check recent ebay history as well as outside sources.

Regarding the rules themselves...

The boxed rulebooks came in two different variants: standard and deluxe. The standard box set, #301, comes with Books 1-3, an advertising sheet, a card to request a catalog, and a pair of d6's. The deluxe box set comes with everything that the standard set has, plus Book 0: An Introduction to Traveller, Introductory Adventure: The Imperial Fringe, and a map of the Spinward Marches.

Sometime in 1983-ish, the Traveller rules were also made available in a "Starter" edition, with somewhat simplified rules. Two versions of this starter edition are available: the standard edition, easily seen with it's color artwork, and deluxe. The starter edition books are 8 1/2" by 11" and there are two of them. The deluxe set includes Book 0, Introductory Adventure, and the map.

Your box sets note that there are five books in the box, with only one set having books 1-3, which based on the product number (301), is all that should be there. What are the other two books in the other two boxes? Valuewise, the core rules are the most common books out there, having been printed continously from 1977 until MegaTraveller was released. Most sets, even complete in the box, don't get much more than $10. If the books are pre-revised, they might not sell for even that, as it is widely known that the pre-revision version of the rules had some issues that were fixed in the revised edition.

You state you have supplements 1-9 with additional copies of 3, 7, and 9. If Supplement 5 is included within that listing, it needs to be put in the Azhanti High Lightning box, as Supplement 5 was not available seperately. In general, most of the supplements are lucky to fetch $5 each. Most listings for Supplements though I see on ebay start out at .99 cents and are fortunate to reach the $2 mark. The only real exception to that trend is Supplement 4: Citizens of the Imperium. That one is the most popular of the Supplements, and might get a bit higher than $5.

Double Adventure 1 is about $5 on ebay. Adventure 1 is the most common adventure, being printed continuously throughout the Classic Traveller run. That Adventure you'd be lucky to get $2 for it, so if you were to go and sell on ebay, I'd put the adventure with one of the rule sets.

The two issues of High Passage you have there are rather uncommon in Traveller circles, although the Traveller Bibliography (http://www.travellerbibliography.org) does have pictures of their covers. These were produced by FASA along with some adventures. FASA didn't produce much Traveller material, and all of it is rather hard to find. Their adventures tend to get between $7 and $8. Just recently, someone offered a copy of High Passage #3 as a buy it now and it got sold quickly. That was $4.50. I believe you can do better, as the winner of the auction paid a grand total of less than $10 for the magazine, and I view that as a steal.

JTAS, the Journal of the Traveller's Aid Society, was GDW's house magazine. Currently, there is a Best Of Volume 2 available for $4.50, and a Number 11 for $6.99 (sans shipping) on ebay. Those are in a store front, not an auction, so those prices are graven in stone.

You also note that you have JTAS Issues 1-12 and 13-24. I'm only guessing here, but I presume those are the reprint volumes. Valuewise, those are going for about $25 each.
