Heads up dudes and dudettes,

I suspect many of you must miss my pipe-smoking mug, so I'll be posting my new avatar tomorrow.  The first one to PM me with the correct identity of the person in the photo wins a free, that's right FREE, copy of Portals of Twilight in the original, crinkly shrinkwrap.   Wooooo!  How cool is that?

Have a pleasant evening,
Stephen

P.S.  My money's on Clarkie.

The sharks are circling, and my guess is someone will hit it fairly soon.  Meanwhile, I'm heading north again for the next week, so don't take it personally if I don't get back to you right away.

Keep trying!

Okay, here's the mega-hint to wrap this thing up:  he was the AFL's leading rusher in one of the years from 1960 - 1965.

I predict either Duke or Frank will have it today.

Oooh, nice link, David!  Sorry, there's a typo in my last post.  Give or take 4 years on either end of the dates...You should have it then!

Based on the hint, and the link harami posted, and the uniform colors, there are two guys it could be:

Lance Alworth of the San Diego Chargers, or Billy Cannon of the Houston Oilers. My money's on Cannon...

edit: whoops, nevermind. You posted a change in dates. My guesses are invalidated... argh!

hah david - was about 15 mins ahead of you on that one. i know sod all about american football and only started watching it in the early 80's when John Riggins was still a running back for the Washington Redskins.

Still, after browsing through the stats, i came up with:

Abner Haynes, 1960
Billy Cannon, 1961
Cookie Gilchrist, 1962
Clem Daniels, 1963
Cookie Gilchrist, 1964
Paul Lowe, 1965

Now i have no idea which one it is that is the picture, but there you go. Gave me an interesting 10-15 mins away from work, so thats good enough to me Smile

Al

<edit> ahhh right change the dates now have we? bah can't be arsed now Smile besides i have about 10 of them Portals anyway Very Happy

I know nothing about AFL football, but I'm pretty good with Google.  Wink Looks like Paul Lowe, in 1965, with the San Deigo Chargers (#23) to me.

Hrm...scratch that.  On further inspection, it would turn out that Paul Lowe is an African American, and unlikely to be the man in the photo.  Embarassed  Guess the jersey number threw me.

As are Cookie Gilchrist, Abner Hayes, and Clem Daniels.

It's not Lance Alworth, either ...

The typo is 4 years on either side? ... well, there was no AFL before 1960, so it's not in that direction. So, we're looking at 1960-1969.

If it's a Charger (and the uniform color looks about right), it must be 1969 AFL rushing leader ... **sends name in PM **

+++++

(Either that or it's Billy Cannon, and the Oilers' uniforms were more powder-blue than I remember)

It's over, folks.  We have a winner!

Damn, that was a lot of fun.  It was nice to see the names of all those old greats roll in.  Let's do that again sometime!

Congrats. Smile

(And a nice one, Stephen; even though it took almost a month to play out: time-outs not withstanding).

And the answer is...Dickie Post!  Of course!

The avatar is a scan of the PROOF for one of his cards.  If Aneoth were still around he could tell you how cool it is to have one of those babies.

*spots an ulterior motive for all the fun & games* Cool

(Is that yet another way to break the credit card in one easy lesson, Stephen?)

Yep, I'd noticed Aneoth almost came back, then vanished again. Sad
Still got a PM for him in his in-tray from mid-May... *sigh*

Okay, how about this:  which euro league soccer player was born in Greenland?  There could be another minty JG mod in it for the one who gets it right.

Despite several injuries and stiff competition from talented younger players such as Dennis Rommedahl and Peter Lovenkrands, Gronkjaer remains Denmark coach Morten Olsen's first choice as right winger, often with Martin Joergensen on the left.

Olsen is well aware of his qualities, Gronkjaer having played under the coach at Ajax.

Born in Nuuk in Greenland and with a small-town childhood and adolescence in northern Denmark, Gronkjaer prefers to keep a low profile that fits the Nordic stereotype like a glove.
