These modules were designed as stand-alone adventures for
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. S1 was the original tournament
dungeon used at Origins 1.S1 Tomb of Horrors
by Gary Gygax S2 White Plume Mountain by Lawrence Schick S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks by Gary Gygax S4 Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth by Gary Gygax
These four were later (weakly) combined into
supermodule: S1-4 Realms of
Horror
S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks
comes with a double cover (module booklet nested inside two covers of maps).
Thanks to Eric
Pass for this info. S4 Lost Caverns of
Tsojcanth has its own page; follow the link. Modules S5 Dancing Hut of Baba Yaga
and S6 Labyrinth of Madness were planned as 1st Edition AD&D modules, but not actually released
until 1995 (and then without module codes). (Thanks to
Adrian Newman for
this info).

Hoffner, and Rhea Shelley for this info.

booklet. TSR
should have placed a TSR Silver logo on this module, as they did with
other Silver Anniversary reprints, but they did not -- notice that the
difference between this print and Second / Third prints is solely the
presence of the single booklet. This print was available only within
the Return to the Tomb of Horrors boxed set released by TSR in
1999. It did not come shrinkwrapped. (Thanks to Bruce Robertson and
Jeremy Simmons for this info, and to Bruce Robertson for the scan).

left. "Printed in USA" is now centered underneath the Wizard logo.
12 pages.
- Fourth (1980): Orange color
cover. TSR Face logo at the bottom is slightly offset from left
(when compared with later printings). ISBN on back cover bottom
left. Three-line angled yellow banner in upper left corner.
States "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons is a trademark owned..." on the cover.
Has the TSR Product Code (9027) on the front cover, bottom right. 16
pages. (Thanks to John Kozol for this info and the scan).
- Fifth (1981):

right. 16 pages. (Thanks to Alain Bennett for the scan).
- Sixth: Orange color cover.

bottom left. Two-line angled yellow banner in upper left corner.
States "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons is a registered service mark owned..."
on the cover. Now once again has the TSR Product Code (9027) on the
front cover, bottom right. 16 pages. (Thanks to

Newman for the scan).

(not Piece Code) on back cover bottom left. Two-line angled yellow
banner in upper left corner. States "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons is
a registered service mark owned..." on the cover. Has the TSR
Product Code (9027) on the front cover, bottom right. 16 pages.
- Eighth: Orange color cover.
TSR Face logo at the bottom is aligned left. ISBN and Piece Code
(not Product Number) on back cover bottom left. Two-line angled
yellow banner in upper left corner. States "Advanced Dungeons &
Dragons is a registered service mark owned..." on the cover. Has the
TSR Product Code (9027) on the front cover, bottom right. 16 pages.

and Piece Code all on back cover bottom left. Two-line angled yellow

a registered service mark owned..." on the cover. Has the TSR
Product Code (9027) on the front cover, bottom right. 16 pages.
- Tenth (1999): Has the TSR Silver logo in
the bottom left corner. Identical in all other respects to the Third
print. This print was available only within the limited-edition
Silver Anniversary Collector's Edition
released by TSR in 1999. It did not come shrinkwrapped.
S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks A word of caution on this printing sequence: TSR seems to
have done a real mix-and-match job with this module. Our best guess is
below, but we're still not sure we've got it right. Any and all clarifying
info is appreciated! - First (1980): Wizard logo on
exterior cover and interior booklet covers. First line at the top of
the cover is the module title, "Expedition to the Barrier Peaks".
Angled-yellow banner in upper left corner is three lines of text ("For
Advanced D&D Game"). ISBN on back cover bottom left. Maps (on
interior covers) in black ink. Illustration
#41 is by Jeff Dee (signed "D' 80"). Illustration #45 is of the
main deck (by Roslof?), and all subsequent illus. are shifted by one in
their numbering sequence (i.e., the module references illustration #51,
but it's actually #52). Thanks to Michael Deaton and Gerald Sherfy for help with this
info.
- Second (1981): TSR Face logo on exterior cover,
Wizard logo on both booklets. Module title on cover (this and
successive printings) is in a smaller font size than the First
printing, and is now placed beneath a line stating "Dungeon Module
S3". Angled-yellow banner in upper left corner is now two lines of
text (still "For Advanced D&D Game"). ISBN on back cover bottom
left. Maps (on interior covers) in black ink. Illustrations #41 and #45 are now by Erol Otus in this and all later
prints (viewable
here). The original illustration of
#41 (by Jeff Dee) was swapped out for an unknown reason; the original
#45 was deleted, the replacement Otus art numbered #44a, and the numbering of subsequent art corrected in
order to match the module text references. Thanks to Jim &
Debbie Hunton for help with this info.
- Third: TSR Face logo on
exterior cover and both booklets. Angled-yellow banner in upper left
corner is now back to three lines of text. ISBN (only) on back cover
bottom left. Maps in black ink. (Thanks to
Adrian Newman for
this info). Thanks to Michael Deaton, Curt Gould,
John Hall, Bruce Probst, Gerald Sherfy, and David Silberman for this info, and
to David Silberman for the
scans.
- Fourth:
TSR Face logo on exterior cover and both booklets. Angled-yellow
banner in upper left corner switches, once again, to two lines of text.
ISBN (only) on back cover bottom left. Maps in black ink Thanks to
Michael Deaton and Curt Gould for help with this info.
- Fifth: TSR Face logo on
exterior cover and on adventure booklet; Wizard logo on interior
illustration booklet (Note: TSR used the earlier Wizard-logo
illustration booklet -- from the Second print -- with this print!).
Angled-yellow banner in upper left corner is two lines of text. ISBN
and Product Number on back cover bottom left. All maps in blue ink.
Thanks to Neville Ridley-Smith for help with this info.
-
Sixth:
TSR Face logo on exterior cover and both booklets. Angled-yellow
banner in upper left corner is two lines of text. ISBN and Product
Number on back cover bottom left. All maps in black ink. Thanks to
Rene Hurka and Michael Deaton for help with this info.
- Seventh:
Contents identical to Sixth, but has a
cardboard header glued to the top of the module, with the D&D logo and
some other advertising. The module itself, separated from the
header, is indistinguishable from a Sixth printing. Thanks to Mike
Kuo for the scan. Further info on header modules is
here.

The Seventh printing of S3 Expedition to the Barrier
Peaks, with the header intact, is fairly rare. SW condition
assumes the header is present.
